New Design Approved!!!

So, here it is. Approved by the design departments of the City of Beaverton, Tualatin Hills Park & Rec District. We redesigned it to fit under 1000 sq. feet so that we don't need a lot of permits. And, they allowed us to put as many flags as we want on 25 foot flagpoles. Score.

Now time to concentrate on raising $250,000 to make it happen.

Two New Partners Join Our Ranks. We are now Five and growing.

The Beaverton City Library has agreed to help us with our information gathering. Once everything is in place they can supply us with hot links to information on the internet, a link to their powerful library Search web site where you can find a book in the library system on the subject of interest and finally a link with a contact at their Research section. Our thanks to Abigail Elder, Director, Beaverton City Library.

The Beaverton School District will be working with us on how their students can be involved with adding reports, projects and art to this site. Maureen Wheeler, Public Communications Officer, Beaverton School District has been our champion on this project as liaison between us and the Principals and teachers of the elementary schools - 5th grade, middle schools - 8th grade and high school - APHistory. Thanks Maureen.

Over the next month or so we can tell you more and show you some results.

Continental Soldier Sculpture

If you are a member of the Sons of the American Revolution or Daughter of the American Revolution you can purchase a Patriot sculpture with the name of your Patriot ancestor engraved on each. These are 14" versions of the 6' soldiers cast in bronze on the memorial by artist Michael Tieman.

There are three sculptures, the Minuteman, Militia soldier and the Continental soldier (pictured to the left). These sculptures are cold cast in bronze/resin one at a time by the artist, ready to hang with a wood back and a metal plate engraved with the name of your Patriot. If you would like one of these and you do not have a Patriot, the nameplate will be engraved with the type of soldier. Collect all three.

Each sculpture is $100 plus $15 S&H. The Memorial will receive $50 from each sale.  Contact Michael at  info@ORWM.org for more details.

There are two more soldiers to be made, the Militia Soldier and the Minuteman. All three will begin as these small maquettes before being sculpted in the final life-size images, cast in bronze and set into the ends of three of the walls.

More Meetings and Revisions

Spent the last few days talking with a contractor to see how much this memorial will cost. Important info since we will be raising money to fund it. Also had coffee with a friend Patti who is a DAR (Daughter of the American Revolution). showed her a PowerPoint presentation I am working on and having her go over the handout. I need to make a presentation to the Oregon DAR and want her input. 
She gave me a lot of good advice and pointers so now I need to rework the PowerPoint and handout for next meeting.

How About Some Sculpture?

 Spent the last few days working on sculpture concepts/drawings, a Minitman, a Militia, and a Continental soldier. I thought I would sculpt these life size in clay and have them cast in bronze as a bas-relief, maybe 4-6 inches deep. Worked out the specs and have prices from the foundry I use for my other sculpture. 
This guy may look familiar. If you look in the background photo of this blog this is Fred, one of our Color Guard, dressed in his finest Continental uniform.
